Learning to Drive

Before you can begin learning to drive you will need to have applied for and received a provisional licence from the DVLA, then you will be able to start out on the road to obtaining your full UK driving licence. Due to the volume of traffic on today's roads, learning to drive is much more demanding than it was years ago so you will need to be properly prepared. I will teach you not only to pass your driving test, but also teach you the necessary skills to be a safe and competent driver.

Before you can take the Practical driving test you need to take and pass the Theory/Hazard Perception test. I can help you prepare for this test.

The Practical Driving Test begins with a test of your eyesight where you will have to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (old style number plate) or 20 metres (new style number plate) then you will be asked a couple of questions relating to the vehicle safety checks, following this the actual driving test begins which will last for about 40 minutes. The standard required to pass this test is much higher than it used to be.

How long does it take to learn to drive?

A very good question!

The number of lessons needed variies hugely from person to person. Some people take less than 25 hours, others will need many more. According to the Driving Standards Agency, the average person in the UK takes around 45 hours with a professional instructor, with an additional 22 hours of private practice!

What ever your age or ability I will tailor your tuition to suit YOU!

You will be able to monitor your progress throughout your course of lessons with the Pupil progress Record, which I will complete after each session so you can see exactly how you are doing.

• You've passed your test but haven't driven much since (if at all)

The Driving Instructor

My name is Richard Bowers, I am a fully qualified Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) working in the Colchester area, and a member of the Motor Schools Association.

Previously before I became a one man one car driving school I worked for a well known local driving school. I really enjoy my work which I hope will be evident when you start taking lessons.

Although learning to drive is a serious business and at times can be frustrating for a learner, I will ensure that you enjoy learning to drive in a calm and safe environment.

The Learner Car

The car I use for driving tuition is a 2008 Suzuki Swift 1.3 DDIS, which has power steering, height adjustable drivers seat, electric mirrors, air con, plus numerous other safety features, and yes it is fitted with dual controls ( just in case ).

Pass Plus Courses

Pass Plus is a course of lessons designed to enable you to gain more experience behind the wheel of a car. Whilst there is no test at the end you will receive a certificate to show that you have succesfully completed the course.

The course consists of six modules:

1. Town driving
2. Out of town driving
3. Driving in the dark
4. Driving in all weather
5. Dual carriageways
6. Driving on Motorways

As Pass Plus is recognised by the car insurance industry many firms offer a good discount.
