Learning to Drive

Before you can begin learning to drive you will need to have applied for and received a provisional licence from the DVLA, then you will be able to start out on the road to obtaining your full UK driving licence. Due to the volume of traffic on today's roads, learning to drive is much more demanding than it was years ago so you will need to be properly prepared. I will teach you not only to pass your driving test, but also teach you the necessary skills to be a safe and competent driver.

Before you can take the Practical driving test you need to take and pass the Theory/Hazard Perception test. I can help you prepare for this test.

The Practical Driving Test begins with a test of your eyesight where you will have to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20.5 metres (old style number plate) or 20 metres (new style number plate) then you will be asked a couple of questions relating to the vehicle safety checks, following this the actual driving test begins which will last for about 40 minutes. The standard required to pass this test is much higher than it used to be.

The amount of hours it takes to get to test standard can vary considerably. The Driving Standards Agency recommends about 45 hours with an Approved Driving Instructor plus 22 hours of private practise. Obviously not everybody has the option of being able to practise outside of their normal driving lessons.

In my experience learners who are also practising outside their lessons with a member of their family take fewer lessons to reach test standard. The least amount of lessons so far for a learner of mine who has had no private practise is 26 hours to pass, and the most lessons for a learner with no private practise is 92 hours to pass.

The Driving Instructor

My name is Richard Bowers, I am a fully qualified Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) working in the Colchester area, and a member of the Motor Schools Association.

Previously before I became a one man one car driving school I worked for a well known local driving school. I really enjoy my work which I hope will be evident when you start taking lessons. I am a firm but fair instructor with a lot of patience.

Although learning to drive is a serious business and at times can be frustrating for a learner, I will ensure that you enjoy learning to drive in a calm and safe environment.

Intensive Driving Courses

15 hour course

This course proves ideal for those nearing test standard or for those who have recently failed a driving test. Price: £270 (£18.00 per hour)

25 hour course

This course is designed for those with some driving experience. Basic skills such as moving away, gear changing and steering should already be mastered. Price: £437.50 (£17.50 per hour)

30 hour course

This course is designed for the confident young beginner or for those with some previous driving experience. Price: £525.00 (£17.50 per hour)

35 hour course

This is the best selling course and is ideal for those individuals with little or - no previous driving experience. Price: £595.00 (£17.00 per hour)

Pass Plus Courses

Pass Plus is a course of lessons designed to enable you to gain more experience behind the wheel of a car. Whilst there is no test at the end you will receive a certificate to show that you have succesfully completed the course.

The course consists of six modules:
